In FILM FORM, Eisenstein tells how the montage technique of Japanese poetry and drama is derived from ideograms combining concrete signs to form abstract symbols.  I thought it would be funny to juxtapose stereotypes of Japan transmitted through American pop culture.  The syllables of tanka lines beat out the rhythm 5-7-5-7-7.
